Mark Strand Has Been Eating Poetry

I just got my little letter from the 92nd St Y, congratulating me on my status as semifinalist in the Discovery/Boston Review contest. Nice! That's the contest where I signed my cover letter "Extremely warm" instead of "Sincerely yours." Ultimate mistake, my readers, or else...ultimate advantage. Assuming the latter, next year I will sign myself:

Fetally yours,
Ur mom
P.S. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO WIN

Hey, congrats, Trish!

You would be a scary mom.

WELL. What if I told you I was pregnant right now...with the universe, and all things in it?

I've seen your recent pix, and if you're preggers, it must be early days :)

It's always early days when you're pregnant with the universe!

I can't imagine the kind of cravings you have with that type of pregnancy. Congrats on all counts!

My God, it's full of STARS...

(congratulations, girl)

Big bang nothing, Adam--Nic's comment has tempted me to make a pica joke, but I fear that God will strike me down from within if I do.

Thanks, Dave!

You'll win because 1. your poetry is brilliant and 2. God wants to punish you.

love,
your Midwife of the Universe. Just give me a call at 1-800-ouchfucking ouch when the time comes.

Too late already! This is one of those contests where they tell you that you WERE a semifinalist in their rejection letter to you, to make you feel better. The winners were Bridget Lowe, Jynne Dilling Martin, Jeffrey Schultz, and Annabelle Yesseul Yoo. Of these four, only Jynne Dilling Martin has a substantial presence online, and she's very good.

I still think you have a chance. That's how much I believe in your work.

Awesome! That is so great. I'm going to change all my cover letters from now on.
