Creature Porn Abyss: Part Two

How desperately bad do I want this for a future book cover? In the end, though, I'll probably settle for something along these lines:

That made me cry. Another reason people should not keep falcons as pets.

*nods* You are an empress of animal empathy, Rebecca. An Empranimapathy, if you will.

Um, she's not a pet. Not even close...

Hi, Dr. Hypercube! I read Diary on a semi-regular basis, but I wasn't sure exactly why you were keeping a falcon, so I didn't presume to say. Can you point me to a particular post about the subject that would give me the proper background?

You know, I never thought my readership would grow past single digits - I've never bothered doing much background explanation. I think I'll remedy that - at least as far as the falcon is concerned - this week.

Reader's Digest version: I'm a falconer and she's a falconry bird. The falconer/falcon (or hawk) relationship puts the falconer into a servant role most of the time - it is a bargain we strike with raptors. We show that we are useful; they hunt with us. "Pet" misses the point - in fact, if said by one falconer about another, it's an insult. "Oh, Biff - yes he's quite the pet-keeper. I don't think he's flown that bird this season."

Thanks, Dr. Hypercube. I look forward to the full post, as I know nothing about falconry whatsoever. I found your blog a while back when I was looking for--what else--pictorial representations of hypercubes! If you're not careful, you're going to get a ton of poets at your place looking to poach on your specialty lizzanguage.

For a poet who is also a falconer, see Pluvialis' Fretmarks blog (in my blogroll). She's wicked awesome pissah (as we say up here) - one of her poems is here.

Aha! Endless intersections! I'll add her to my reading list--thanks for the recommendation.
